If you’re still trying to get your startup off the ground, it’s a lot of work! You need to build your team, make sure the product is good enough, and then find customers. It feels like a second full-time job. And with so much effort going into everything else, marketing often gets pushed to the side until it’s too late. But there are tons of ways new entrepreneurs can improve their marketing strategies before they launch  and stay on top afterward!

1) Invest in Traditional Marketing Early

It may feel counterproductive to spend time and money on something that doesn’t directly make money for you yet. But it’s important to keep in mind that even the best startups need to spend money on marketing before they start making money. Investing in marketing is also a good way to gain great insights into what does and does not work for you, and why.

2) Educate yourself on Marketing

Learning about marketing can be a lot of fun. There’s a lot of information out there! But the first step is always to learn the basics of what your audience wants, and what gets them engaged with your content. Don’t feel pressured to learn everything overnight, just start by filling in the gaps you think you have. (For example, if you’re a WordPress developer who doesn’t know anything about SEO, invest some time into learning how to optimize your content for search engines.)

3) Know your Audience

The most basic of basics is also the most important: Know who you’re marketing to. What do they like? What do they want? What are their biggest pain points? Getting to know these things will help you when you start creating content, designing your website and social media pages, and more.

4) Find your Audience Online

Thankfully, it’s easier today than ever to find out what your audience wants! First, you should check out your competitors. What do they have in common? Where do they overlap? How is their content similar/different? What are their main content strategies and tactics?

Once you’ve learned a bit about what makes up successful marketing strategies, start checking out the people who are already doing it  and then follow them on social media! On Twitter, you can follow brands with a similar focus as yours (such as startups or WordPress themes)  and then see what they’re talking about on their own channels. On Facebook, look for pages that are popular with a similar audience to yours, and then see what their strategies are. On LinkedIn, look for related companies, and reach out to them.

Always be on the lookout for other people and brands who have similar objectives to you; it doesn’t have to be your exact audience or business plan. You can learn from anyone you meet! It’s also important not to just follow people blindly. Research is key, see where they’re taking their company, and follow those leads.

5) Create a Content Marketing Strategy

The old marketing adage goes: “Content is King.” In fact, this is one of the most important ways you can market your product. It’s not just about coming up with great blog posts, photos, or videos, it’s about creating a strategy that makes your content not only valuable but interesting for your audience. This means knowing who you’re talking to, and what they want from you!

7) Learn About Your Audience Through Customer Service

Whose services are the most successful? It’s unlikely that you’ll have better customer service than your competitors (and if you do, it’s not very representative of the way a typical customer would interact with you). However, by studying some of the best service departments in your niche, you can learn how to make your customer experience as good or better than those who are already doing it well.

8) Get Feedback Early and Often

You can’t get any customers until you have a product, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start getting feedback once you do. Even if you have years of experience in your industry, there’s always something more to learn. By actively seeking out the feedback of others  both insiders and outsiders  you’ll not only be able to make your product stronger but know where to focus your marketing efforts in the future.

9) Learn the Laws of Acquisition

Every industry has its own laws that are very different from others. For example, there might be a specific way you can acquire customers in your niche, and you need to learn them before you launch. Make sure you know what these laws are, and how they apply to your business.

10) Begin Marketing Early Enough

If you wait too long, it’s going to be hard to get the word out and begin marketing your product before your competitors do. Start planning for growth as soon as you have a chance  even if it means starting some marketing efforts early on in your startup. You may be able to get a few tweets out, or start building up your email list. The sooner you start marketing, the sooner you’ll have an audience that’s waiting for you!

11) Get creative with your Marketing Strategy

A lot of startups are content to just use the same old strategies that everyone else does but this is a mistake. Don’t be afraid to stand out in a way that makes sense for your brand. This might mean focusing on something that others aren’t doing at all, or something they’re currently doing poorly.
